Park National Bank creates associate spending program to support downtown Newark businesses

September 1, 2016

Local bank pledges up to $74,100 to help merchants through construction period

NEWARK, Ohio — The Park National Bank launched a unique program for its 741 associates to support downtown Newark businesses over the next four months. Recognizing the challenges many downtown Newark merchants are facing due to ongoing construction projects, the bank is giving money to its associates to motivate them to patronize downtown businesses.

The first part of the program is a $25 voucher that associates can spend in September at downtown retail businesses that have a relationship with Park National. Thirty-four merchants are participating in the program, and Park associates can use their vouchers at a variety of businesses including jewelry stores, food markets, auto mechanic shops, hair stylists and more.

The message delivered with the voucher included a map and encouraged associates to support a store they haven’t visited often. Signed by the bank’s Chairman Dan DeLawder and bank CEO David Trautman, it said, “While our downtown Newark area will be more beautiful and inviting when all the projects are complete, our business neighbors are currently feeling the sting from the construction and road closures. We’re here to provide extra support.”

The bank also committed to reimburse every associate fifty percent of their spending at any downtown business, up to $25 per month, from October 1 through December 31.

“Our clients are important to us. Our communities are important to us,” Trautman said. “Different areas need different forms of support. Right here, right now, this is something we can do. It’s something we ought to do, and something we’re glad to do.”

Park National’s program has potential to cost the bank more than $74,100. Bank leaders designed the program to inspire associates to spend more of their own money and develop new relationships with local merchants, hoping to infuse far more than an extra $74,100 into the downtown area during this crucial period.
